Blog Now! Find Perfection Later!

ImageYou may be facing a dilemma. You want to blog, but you want things to be just so. You want to put up your website, but it isn’t perfect yet. The goal of trying to obtain perfection can become absolutely debilitating. As Anthony Robbins puts it, you get caught up in the “paralysis of analysis” – you can’t finish something because you keep going back over it and analyzing it and changing it and modifying it. Pretty soon, time has passed you by and you are sitting there without your blog and without your website. Maki, over at Dosh Dosh, had an absolutely excellent article on perfectionism and the effects it has on your mind.

Not sweating the little things is hard. If you are like me, you worry about the “what ifs”. What if no one likes the design? What if no one cares about what I half to say? What if this? What if that? You can waste a lot of time wondering what if. The challenge, if this is you, is to change your mindset. Recognize that the small things will take care of themselves. Don’t beat yourself up if something isn’t coming out exactly how you planned and, most importantly, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Maybe you are going to get something wrong – so what? You can’t allow the possibility of that happening to disable you.

So what should you do to stop your perfectionism from disabling you? Take action! The next time you are faced with a decision that you are struggling with, just pick one of the available choices and run with it. For instance, I started off with a blog design that I wasn’t 100% in love with. I could have taken the time to create one I loved, but I didn’t. After going back and forth for a few days, I shut down, made a choice and got on with it. Now that the blog has launched eventually I am going to change the design, however, the important thing was that I took action. I didn’t stop and let that one detail hold up the whole show.

Here is what we are going to do. Find one thing that you have been obsessing over and trying to make perfect. It could be setting up a blog or setting up a website or designing something. Now I want you to just go and do it! That’s right – JUST DO IT! Don’t worry about if it looks spectacular – half of the blogs and websites out there don’t look grand and yet they still get traffic. Don’t worry about if you have time – if you have time to eat, you have time to blog (just don’t spill anything on the computer :-( as that would be very ‘un-perfect’). Just do it! Once you let go and realize that the world is not going to end because you didn’t do something ‘perfectly’, you will begin to realize how much time you were wasting and how you can move forward without perfection. As Judge Judy always says “keep it simple stupid!” The more you worry about things, the farther away from actually taking action you go.

Don’t be one of those people that ends up with a string of unfinished projects behind them because they just couldn’t get things “perfect.” Getting your mind on track isn’t easy when you are a perfectionist, but taking the time to try may be one of the single most important things you ever do. Perfectionist are rarely happy people because they find failure and things that aren’t perfect all around them. They try to compensate by throwing time at the problem, but, time never seems to be on their side. Don’t let life pass you by while you sit on the side trying to make everything perfect down to the last small detail. Life is too short and your time is too precious. Get up and just do it!!

I’m going to write a few more posts now –  I just need a little more time to make them ……perfect :-).
