Is StumbleUpon Dot Com A Mind Altering Drug?
Written by Kila Morton

ImageHello my name is Kila and I'm a StumbleUponholic! If the first step to curing a problem is admitting that you have one, then I'm here to say I need help. I don't know what has happened to me! It started off innocently enough. I went to StumbleUpon.com months ago and signed up for an account. I thought I knew what I was doing. I'm a good person! Why can't I Stumble around? Am I not worthy? I was so innocent and naive back then. What happened to me? I installed the darn toolbar. OK. Things were going well. I hit the Stumble! button......oh......ohhhh.....WHAT HAVE I DONE? I have now gone from regular website viewer to a "you better explain your website to me visually in 2 seconds or less or I'm hitting this darn Stumble button" person! What happened to me? Where did I go wrong? How did I end up being a.....a....StumbleUponholic?

The StumbleUpon effect has taken a lot of people by surprise. This effect is two fold. On one end, you have the effect that Stumble Upon visitors have on your website. They come in droves very quickly and tend to leave just as quickly. Some will sign up for your feed and some will come back, but, Stumblers are typically in and out. The second aspect of the StumbleUpon effect happens to the actual Stumbler. You actually start processing things more quickly as you view a website. Click the button, don't like this site, I'm gone - 1.5 seconds. Click the button, this site is great, hit the 'I like it!' button, I'm gone - 4 seconds. Click the button, I will read this site at some point in the future, hit the 'I like it!' button, bookmark it with Google Bookmarks, I'm gone - 60 seconds. Does this sound familiar to you? If it does, you may be a StumbleUponholic too!

I'm a business woman and, among other things, my business is creating software and designing websites. As a web designer, StumbleUpon.com starts to have a very strange, yet wonderful effect on you. You start thinking about how quickly your message is communicated when someone visits your blog or website. Oh yes, yes, you thought about this before, BUT, StumbleUpon.com forces you to think about this more than you ever have before. When I first came across StumbleUpon.com, I just submitted a few of my own articles.

Honestly, I was looking at StumbleUpon as a place to build back links to PureBlogic. The site has excellent PageRank and, as I have written about many times on PureBlogic, quality back links are essential when you have a new blog if you want to build up PageRank. I honestly thought I was too busy to sit and sift through websites. What I didn't realize at the time was that I was ignorant about the true nature of this powerful tool we call StumbleUpon. It wasn't until I invested a few minutes to actually Stumble that I realized the power of this drug....ummm I mean tool. StumbleUpon.com allows you to not only find great sites with terrific designs and quality content, it allows you to really begin to understand the enormous nature of the web from an end-user standpoint. Maybe I didn't explain that correctly. Let me explain.

When you design websites, often there are different elements that have to be taken into account. You have a marketing aspect - this site is supposed to communicate something about this product or thing. You have a back-end aspect - this site uses these technologies. You have a design aspect - this site needs to match our company look and feel. Often, people pushing for these individual elements aren't thinking about the raw nature of the end-users. If a person is busy and they only have a few seconds to look at your site, then that fancy copy you spent thousands of dollars having written may not even be read. That fantastic design that has hidden elements that people have to mouse over to see may never be seen. Those fantastic technologies all over the site that allow people to instantly do this and that on your site, may never be known. Why? Because your design only has 1 to 2 seconds to tell the end user about all of those things! That changes everything!

For the next few weeks, I am going to be writing articles about the delirious effects of StumbleUpon.com, how we can harness this drug....ummm I mean tool for ourselves and how we as bloggers, designers, business owners and end users can make the most of this effect together. I don't think we need rehab or detox yet for our StumbleUponholic state. I think we just need to figure out how high we are going to go. :-)

What do you think?

By the way, if you like this article or if you are a StumbleUponholic too, please feel free to Stumble this aricle by clicking the little StumbleUpon icon below the article . :-)
