Many people spend a great deal of time adding methods of monetization to their sites. They run to Google Adsense, Kontera, Link Worth, TexLinkAds, etc tro try and use as many ways of capturing a click as they can. This is understandable. We all want more money. There is, however, one inherent flaw with many site owners that do this. They have absolutely no idea who is coming to their sites! No idea! Now you may be one of those people and I can almost read your mind. You are asking yourself HOW it would be possible for you to know who is coming to your site? In this article I'm going to show you the how and help you figure out what you need to know to maximize the earning potential of your site. Before I begin, let me just say this. Until you figure out who is coming to your website, you will never be able to earn the kind of money online that you want to earn IF earning money is your objective.
- First, targeting the "make money online" group of people will be almost impossible if all you use is Adsense. Why? Because people with websites about making money are often the least likely to click on an Adsense ad on another site. They are information gatherers typically. When they visit a site they aren't really interested in anything other than some piece of information they think you may have. All of your pretty in text ads and Adsense ads are absolutely meaningless to this group. Many, many people think that they are going to jump into that make money online arena and prosper because they see a popular blogger doing the same. The thing that you have to realize is that those pro-bloggers typically have a mix of advertising systems at work on their sites AND they typically never derive their income solely from Google Adsense. So what does this mean to you? Here are your first lessons.
- If you think that you are going to make serious money just with Google Adsense AND you have a site about Making Money Online you likely need to change your thoughts.
- If you have a make money online site and your objective IS to make serious money with it, you will certainly need other methods of generating revenue that will likely not include Adsense.
- Second, you must figure out the demographics for your site. This is the who in who is coming to your site. Is your site frequented by 18 to 25 something males? Certainly the type of advertising that appeals to a 18 to 25 year old male isn't typically going to appeal to a 30 to 40 year old woman. Yet, if you don't know who is coming to your site, you are in essence grouping everyone together at the table and feeding them the same food. You have to understand the types of things that appeal to people visiting your website and optimize it for them in order to squeeze the most out of every interaction with your visitors. If you have no clue about who is visiting, there is help for you. Here is your second lesson.
- You must learn about the type of visitors you have and generate advertising optimized for them.
How To Know Your Visitors
So now you may be wondering how you can ever actually know who your visitors are. Relax! You don't have to know their names, you just have to figure out the demographics. Here is a step by step breakdown of how you are going to learn who your visitors are.
- Determine what your site is about. If you don't know, you will never be able to know anything about your visitors.
- Determine the keywords for your site. Keywords are one or two word phrases that identify what your site is about. For instance, if you tell people how to make make money online your keywords are likely going to be make money online, online income, ways to make money, ways to generate income, online money, money, online, online money making, etc. Do you get my point? Knowing your keywords is an absolute MUST. Without them you can't optimize your site.
- Use a tool to chart your demographics based on those keywords. This requires some effort. You are actually going to have to take your list of words and check them one by one to get a rough idea of the demographics for those words. There are three tools that will really help you understand the importance of those keywords.
The keyword tool will allow you to input a keyword and get an idea of who is interested in that keyword - men, women, teens, older people, etc. The Demographic tool allows you to put in keywords and get an idea of who would be interested in those words AND your URL to see who or what demographic would typically be interested in the content you have on your site.
- Once you have this information, you can move on to optimizing your site for your target demographic. That optimization includes the following.
- Making sure you have search engine friendly URLs for your articles that include your keywords (look at the URL of this article in your address bar).
- Making sure that your article contains your keywords and words related to your keywords.
Using Your Site Demographic Info
Now that you are aware of who is coming to your site, you can begin to place advertising on your site that is relevant to your site visitors. This information will also allow you to put together articles that are relevant to your demographic. That will likely have the affect of increasing your traffic if you market those articles in the places where your target market hangs out. Here is a summary of the benefits of knowing this information.
- You will be able to place advertising on your page that is relevant to your demographic
- You will be able to generate articles that are relevant to your readers
- You will be able to get a better idea of where you should market your articles to reach your demographic
Don't think that by targeting a demographic you are missing out on something. The truth is that you can't be all things to all people. Trying to do that will place you in a situation where you can't maximize your own growth. Your website is a product and you have to start thinking about it that way. In the same way that regular advertisers target certain people for certain products, you have to do the same with your website. If you have a high-end site about antiques, marketing your site to 18 year olds that just moved away from their parents is useless. If you have a site about your three kids and the art they make, marketing your site to that 25 year old guy who just got out of college isn't the greatest idea. Do you understand? You have to know who is coming to know how to keep them coming and make the most of their interactions with you and your site.
