Sometimes social networks use software to automatically detect a website’s RSS feed. This process, supported by most major browsers, is one of the best ways to inform users about your website’s  sydication (RSS) feed.

When you have Autodiscovery set up on your site, the RSS symbol will display on the address bar in Firefox. In Internet Explorer 7, the icon will be located next to the little House icon in the toolbar area. Here is a look at the placement of the icon in both FireFox and IE7.

Here are the steps that you need to take to enable Autodiscovery for your website.

1. Create your RSS feed. You can use your own methods or you can use a service like Feedburner.com to help you.

   
   

2. Add the following tag to the head section of your website before the closing </head> tag.

   
   <link rel=“alternate” type=“application/rss+xml” title=“Your feed name” href=“http://feeds.feedburner.com/pureblogic”>

   
   

3. Of course you replace the “Your feed name” with your actual feed name and the http://feeds.feedburner.com/pureblogic should be replaced with the link to your actual feed.

   
   

4. After loading the changed page on your server, you should refresh the page and you will see the RSS icon in the address area of FireFox and the RSS icon next to the home icon in Internet Explorer 7.  You can look around for the different locations in other browsers.

That’s it! You have now enabled Autodiscovery for your feed and software programs from places like BlogCatalog will be able to find your recent posts when you sign up for their service.
